Dr. Shahryar Kavoussi Discusses Who Can Benefit from IVF Treatments

Dr. Shahryar Kavoussi, an award winning and leading reproductive endocrinologist, discusses who is likely to benefit from invitro fertilization (IVF) as a fertility treatment option.

Women with the following conditions are candidates for IVF:

  • Women with tubal factor infertility (blocked fallopian tubes).
  • Diminished ovarian reserve – a decrease in egg quantity and/or quality which lowers the chances for multiple eggs to grow with IVF medication, thereby decreasing the number of eggs that fertilize and the number of embryos that can develop well.
  • Endometriosis, a condition where cells from the lining of the uterus grow outside the uterus cavity, leads to difficulty conceiving. IVF has been shown to be the most effective fertility treatment option in achieving pregnancy for women with any stage of endometriosis.
  • Unexplained infertility.

Women with male partner with the following conditions are also good candidates for IVF treatment:

  • Men with significant male factor infertility. For men with very low sperm counts intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can be performed with sperm collected from the male partner. For men with the absence of sperm cells in the ejaculation, sperm can be retrieved from the testicles.
  • Unexplained infertility.

Prospective patients should seek the evaluation from a board certified fertility physician to determine if ivf treatment is a viable option for conceiving.
