Dr. Parviz Kavoussi, Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, was invited as a guest lecturer faculty member at the international Robot Assisted Microsurgical and Endoscopic Society meeting earlier this month in Strasbourg, France. Dr. Kavoussi’s lecture ("Transitioning from Microsurgery to Robotic Microsurgery in Reproductive Urology") focused on the transition of microsurgeons using the operative microscope to using the da Vinci robot to perform male fertility surgery such as vasectomy reversals. The advantages of the robotic system for such surgeries was demonstrated.
"Using the robotic system to perform microsurgery such as vasectomy reversals offers some advantages over the use of the traditional operative microscope such as: elimination of any tremor, improved stability, surgeon ergonomics and decreased surgeon fatigue, scalability of motion, 3D high definition visualization, the ability to manipulate 3 surgical instruments and the camera simultaneously, and not needing a specialty trained microsurgical assistant" states Dr. Parviz Kavoussi.
