In November, 2013, Dr. Parviz Kavoussi was honored to present his surgical experience, expertise and data on robotic vasectomy reversal to multi-specialty, multi-disciplinary robotic microsurgeons from around the world at the Robot Assisted Microsurgical and Endoscopic Society (RAMSES) Annual Meeting held in Strasbourg, France.
The esteemed Dr. Kavoussi presented his surgical experience, expertise and data that indicate that robot assisted vasectomy reversal can be performed with comparable outcomes to the traditional microsurgical vasectomy reversal. The outcomes assessed included success rates, sperm counts after successful reversals, and operative time. There are potential advantages of robot assistance with microsurgery such as vasectomy reversal which include:
• improved stability
• sustained surgeon ergonomics/decreased surgeon fatigue
• scalability of motion with robotic instruments for fine meticulous surgery
• 3-D high definition visualization with the image from the robotic camera
• surgeon ability to manipulate 3 surgical instruments and the magnifying camera all at once
• not needing a specialty skilled microsurgical assistant
• ultimate likelihood of decreasing operative times.
“It was truly an honor to have the opportunity to be a faculty lecturer at the RAMSES conference. It was a wonderful experience to share my data and outcomes and to discuss the advantages of using the operative robot to assist with vasectomy reversal with robotic microsurgeons from all over the world in multiple discplines such as neurosurgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and other urologists,” said Dr. Kavoussi.
Board Certified and Fellowship trained in male infertility and reproductive medicine, Dr. Kavoussi is Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Austin and offers evaluation and treatment for Vasectomy reversals (mini-incision microscopic and da Vinci robot assisted), male infertility, sperm retrievals, Men’s sexual health (erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease/penile curvature, etc.), In office no-scalpel vasectomy and low testosterone at Austin Fertility and Reproductive Medicine/Westlake IVF, the only private fertility center in the United States with fellowship trained specialists in both male and female infertility and reproductive medicine.
