Fertility opportunity for men with cryptozoospermia study presented at the AUA national meeting

The American Urological Association (AUA) holds its national meeting annually, and in 2025, the event took place in Las Vegas. This premier conference brings together over 15,000 urologists from around the world to share and learn about the latest advances in urologic research and care.

Dr. Parviz Kavoussi and the team from Austin Fertility & Reproductive Medicine (AFRM) had a research abstract presented at the meeting, focusing on a complex issue in male fertility. Their study examined men with cryptozoospermia, extremely low sperm counts, sometimes nearly zero, who also have varicoceles, which are abnormally dilated veins around the testicles. These men may be candidates for a treatment aimed at improving sperm production.

Dr. Kavoussi’s research revealed that many of these patients can experience significant improvement in sperm production following microsurgical varicocele repair, a procedure he performs weekly.

“This complex clinical situation has had zero data available to guide us until now,” Dr. Kavoussi explained. “After our study, it is clear that many men with cryptozoospermia and a varicocele can significantly benefit from varicocele repair.”
