What is the difference between fertility treatment under the care of my Ob/Gyn and the care from a Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility specialist)?

A Reproductive Endocrinologist is a physician who, after completing a four-year Ob/Gyn residency program, subsequently has completed an three-year subspecialty fellowship training program in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI).  Board certification in Ob/Gyn is required before an REI physician is eligible for REI board certification.  Once board certification in REI is obtained, maintenance of board certification assures that a high level of knowledge is maintained in the subspecialty.  A Reproductive Endocrinologist is able to offer all levels of fertility evaluation and treatment options, including IVF.
