Varicocele, an abnormal dilation of scrotal veins, is the most common correctable cause of male infertility by causing testicular injury. Men who have lost a testicle from causes such as trauma, testicular torsion, infection, malignancy, or an undescended testicle may be at a baseline disadvantage for infertility. Having a damaging force such as a varicocele may compound this.
Dr. Parviz Kavoussi’s research on the outcomes of surgically repairing varicoceles in men with a solitary testicle with a varicocele was presented at the 2026 South Central Section of the American Urological Association sectional meeting. The outcomes for such men revealed significant improvement in semen parameters and thereby fertility potential by repairing the varicoceles.
Dr. Kavoussi is specialty trained in microsurgical varicocele repair and performs multiple of these meticulous, minimally invasive procedures. He has performed over 1,000 of these treatments over the last decade and a half just in Austin. Dr. Kavoussi explains, “This is the first study evaluating the outcomes of men with a solitary testicle and a varicocele, and provides reassuring evidence suggesting we may counsel our patients in this challenging scenario that varicocele repair may be beneficial for them.”
